What is Cervical Spondylosis ?

Cervical spondylosis is a condition that results from wear and tear of the joints and discs in the neck over time. It is a common problem among older adults, though it can occur in younger people as well. Cervical spondylosis is caused by the gradual degeneration of the cervical vertebrae, which can lead to bone spurs, herniated discs, and narrowed spinal cord or nerve root canals. The condition is sometimes referred to as arthritis of the neck or osteoarthritis of the spine.

Types of Cervical Spondylosis ?

The first type of cervical spondylosis is known as Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy (CSM), which involves nerve compression in the spinal canal. This condition occurs when the cervical discs and the vertebrae start to degenerate due to age, causing compression of the spinal cord.

Another type of cervical spondylosis is Cervical Radiculopathy, which is characterized by nerve root compression in the spine. This occurs when the cervical discs bulge due to the degeneration of the spine, causing the nerves to become compressed.

Causes of Cervical Spondylosis ?

The causes of cervical spondylosis are multifactorial and can be due to various factors such as age, lifestyle choices, and genetic factors. The most common causes of cervical spondylosis are discussed below.
Age
Poor posture
Obesity
Genetics
Degenerative disc disease
Smoking
Injury or trauma

Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis ?

The most common symptoms of cervical spondylosis include neck pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. This pain may radiate to the shoulders, arms, or fingers and worsen with movement or activity. There may also be a tingling or numbness sensation in the arms, hands, or fingers.

The muscles near the affected area may become weak or atrophied, which can lead to difficulty lifting objects, grasping things, or maintaining a proper posture. In severe cases, there may be a loss of bladder or bowel control, which requires immediate medical attention.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Cervical Spondylosis ?

Panchakarma therapy is an essential Ayurvedic treatment approach for cervical spondylosis. The therapy involves a set of purification techniques designed to eliminate toxins and impurities from the body. This therapy includes practices such as Vamana (medicated vomiting), Virechana (purgation), and Basti (medicated enema). Panchakarma therapy strengthens the body’s natural healing ability and enhances its response to other Ayurvedic treatments.

Ayurvedic Medicine of Cervical Spondylosis ?

Ayurveda views cervical spondylosis as a result of imbalances in the vata dosha, one of the three doshas that govern the body's functions. The vata dosha is responsible for movement, and imbalances can lead to dryness, stiffness, and pain. The treatment of cervical spondylosis in Ayurveda involves a combination of herbal medicines, diet, lifestyle changes, and therapies

Diet for Cervical Spondylosis ?

Fruits and veggies: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, boost your immune system, and provide you with essential vitamins and minerals. Aim for at least five servings of fruits and veggies a day, and choose a variety of colors to get a range of nutrients..

Exercise for Cervical Spondylosis ?

One of the most effective forms of exercise for cervical spondylosis is stretching. Stretching can help to improve flexibility and range of motion in the neck, which can reduce pain and stiffness. Some good stretching exercises for cervical spondylosis include chin tucks, head turns, and side bends. These exercises can be done while sitting or standing, and should be done slowly and gently to avoid any strain or discomfort.

Cervical spondylosis is a chronic degenerative condition of cervical vertebrae due to age or trauma. The condition causes osteophyte formation in joints between vertebrae, which puts pressure on ligaments or spinal cord. As it worsens, conditions such as carpel tunnel syndrome can develop.

Cervical spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is diagnosed based on symptoms such as numbness in hands and arms, neck pain , neck stiffness or tenderness , muscle weakness , tingling sensation in arms and hands .

Treatment for cervical spondylosis include heat treatment , physical therapy , exercise therapy or surgery .

Cervical spondylosis is a general term that indicates degenerative changes in your neck region. Common verb ‘wear and tear ‘which affect cervical vertebrate (neck spine), disc or nerve of cervical region.

Causes of Cervical Spondylosis

The cervical spine is made up of seven bones (vertebrae). In between each vertebra is a space known as an intervertebral disc. The intervertebral discs are cushions between each bone that provide flexibility in your neck.

Cervical spondylosis occurs when these discs break down over time due to aging, injury or disease. As these areas wear out due to decreased blood flow, arthritis-like symptoms develop.

This is also referred to as degenerative disc disease because of what happens to your discs with age – they can become dehydrated, inflamed and arthritic over time because of lack of circulation in that region.

  • Causes:- when ‘ wear and tear ‘ develops in cartilage and bones of cervical region following cause includes :-
  • Dehydrate disc – by the age of 40, spine disc begins drying out and shrinking which allows more on bone contact between the vertebrate.
  • Herniated disc – cracks in vertebrate due to age factor lead to herniated disc. building (herniation) of disc sometimes affect your spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Bone spur – production of extra  amount of bone in spine pinch the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Stiffness of the ligaments – flexibility of the neck may affect as there is stiffness of ligaments occurs.
  • Symptoms – In most of the people, cervical spondylosis cause no symptoms.
  • When symptoms occur, it may include
  • Pain in cervical region
  • Stiffness in the neck
  • When involvement of spinal cord,

Nerve it may cause:

  • Numbness/ weakness or tingling sensation in neck, arms and hands.
  • Lack of coordination and difficulty walking.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Pain in cervical region
  • Pain in b/l upper limbs
  • Swelling in cervical region
  • Stiffness in cervical region
  • Headache
  • Weakness and lethargnes

Risk factors – risk factor include:-

  1. Age – aging cause cervical spondylosis
  2. Occupation – lot of stresses overhead work, disturbing position or office work on which continue restricted movement of neck involve may respond to cervical spondylosis.
  3. Neck injuries – recent neck injuries or previous neck injuries lead to cervical spondylosis.
  4. Genetic factor – in some families, some individuals experience more.

Complications – if cervical spondylosis in early stage not get treated it may cause serve spinal injury or nerve compression. If is left untreated it may turn into threating complication.

Differential diagnosis

  • Acute neck strain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Migraine
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Osteomyelitis or tuberculosis
  • Disc prolapsed or diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • gout

Diagnosis – most of the time, it can diagnosed easily on the basis of symptoms and on other hand, investigated tools helped out to diagnosed which we are

  • X -ray
  • CT – SCAN
  • MRI
  • EMG (electromyography)
  • Myelography
  • Nerve conduction study
  • ACUTE and chronic changes according to MRI. treatment days can be plant accordingly

prevention:- These safety measure can reduce the risk of cervical spondylosis –

  • stay physically active
  • use good posture
  • prevent neck injuries
  • avoid trauma

prognosis – in early stage, symptoms may not occurred any serious condition but later may. when neck pain increased , weakness in upper limbs , range of motion affect and there is swelling , stiffness develop it needs extra care.

Some people may suffer with herniated disc, dehydrated disc, bone spur or nerve root involvement then this is serious condition and may convert / turn into complications.
