The most common causes of vomiting include viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning, motion sickness, and pregnancy. Other medical conditions that can cause vomiting include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, and some medications. The most common symptoms of vomiting are nausea or the urge to vomit followed by the actual act of vomiting. In some cases, other symptoms may also be present such as abdominal pain or cramps; dehydration; fever; headache; dizziness or lightheadedness; and changes in bowel movements. It is important to seek medical attention if there is blood in the vomit or if the patient experiences severe abdominal pain, high fever, signs of dehydration such as dry mouth and tongue or dark urine color to prevent complications from prolonged vomiting episodes.
